Hepatotoxicity is the medical term for liver damage. The accumulation of toxins enhances liver damage leading to the apoptosis and necrosis of hepatocytes. Several medicinal plants have been investigated for beneficial used for hepatoprotective activity. In this study Onosma echioides L. is used as hepatoprotective agent. Level of bilirubin, ALT, AST and ALP was disturbed due to induction of toxicity. The level was reversed by the use of Onosma echioides. According to the findings of the current study, Onosma echioides low dose OE (LD) exhibited a significant rise in haematological parameters including MCV, lymphocytes, PCV but a reduction in WBCs, neutrophils and MXD and platelets levels. The RBCs, Hb, platelets, MCH, MCHC, PDW, MPV, PCT, RDW-CV in OE-extract did not showed significant change and high dose of OE (HD) exhibited a significant rise in haematological parameters including MCV, lymphocytes, MCHC but a reduction in WBCs, neutrophils, PCV, MXD and platelets levels. The RBCs, Hb, MXD, MCH, Platelets, MCH, MCHC, PDW, MPV, PCT, RDW-CV in OE-extract did not significantly change. Results of this study show that Onosma echioides has hepatoprotective potential.
